Your First Driving Lesson: A Calm, Simple Checklist

What to bring, what to wear and what to expect from your very first time behind the wheel.

Quick answer

Bring your permit, wear comfortable closed-toe shoes, get some rest, and expect to start slowly in a quiet area. Your instructor has a brake on their side, too.

Checklist

  • Learner permit (or ID for adults)
  • Glasses or contacts if you need them
  • Flat, closed-toe shoes
  • A water bottle
  • Questions you want to ask

What to expect

We'll cover seat and mirror setup, smooth starts and stops, steering and turns. Most students are surprised how quickly the nerves fade.
