How to Get a Learner's Permit in North Carolina

Age requirements, the driver ed course, and what to bring to the DMV — a step-by-step guide for NC teens and parents.

Quick answer

In North Carolina, teens can apply for a Level 1 limited learner permit at age 15 after completing an approved driver education course (30 hours classroom and 6 hours behind the wheel) and passing the DMV's written, sign and vision tests.

Step 1: Complete driver education

Driver ed is the foundation. Students can begin at 14½ so they are ready by their 15th birthday. The classroom portion covers traffic laws, road signs and hazard awareness; the in-car portion builds real-world control with a licensed instructor.

Step 2: Gather your documents

Check the NC DMV website for the current list before your visit. Families typically bring:

  • Driver education completion certificate
  • Proof of age and identity (such as a birth certificate)
  • Social Security number
  • Driving Eligibility Certificate from the student's school
  • A parent or guardian to sign

Step 3: Pass the DMV tests

You'll take a written knowledge test, a road sign test and a vision screening. Our study booklets help students prepare — most who study them pass on the first try.

What happens next

With a learner permit, teens drive with a supervising adult and log practice hours before moving to a provisional license. Call us at 336-722-0584 if you have questions about where your teen is in the process.
